Overhill looking for artists and craftsmen
This includes painters, musicians, dancers, potters, writers, choral groups, furniture makers, quilters, those who practice old time ways, and much more.
The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association (TOHA) is looking for artists and craftsmen who live in McMinn, Monroe, and Polk counties. This includes painters, musicians, dancers, potters, writers, choral groups, furniture makers, quilters, those who practice old time ways, and much more. Gerald D. Hodge, Jr, Executive Director for TOHA, said, “We hope people will think broadly about the definition of art and craft because we are looking for people who make everything from molasses to jewelry.” He added, “Think about the Foxfire series of books from the 1970’s and the evolution of techniques that are available to us today. While we hope to identify poets and painters, we are also hoping to find industrial artists, gun makers, taxidermists, hunting dog trainers, turkey call makers, pie makers, and more.”
TOHA is currently in the process of mailing survey forms to people who are already listed in the Tennessee Overhill’s current directory as well as organizations that sponsor events. Once the survey phase is complete, the information will be presented online as part of the Tennessee Overhill Website. The online directory will achieve multiple objectives. It will serve as a tool for organizations that develop festivals and cultural events. It will result in increased sales and more bookings for artists and craftsmen. And it will shine a light on the rich artistic traditions in the Tennessee Overhill.
Financial support for the survey and online directory is provided by East Tennessee Foundation’s “Art Fund for East Tennessee” and the Tennessee Arts Commission’s “Arts Build Communities” grant program. TOHA encourages artists and craftsmen to contact the Tennessee Overhill office at 423-263-7232 to request a survey form. TOHA is also asking the general public to help identify artists and craftsmen by contacting Gerald D, Hodge, Jr at 423-263-7232 or email@example.com.
