Personal communications devices may become a part of class activity following a cell phone policy vote by school board members Monday Night. The new policy would allow teachers to have lessons in which the devices would be used as part of the lesson. Any such lessons would require pre-approval by the principal. The policy will be voted on again at the June meeting, slated for June 23rd.
Polk County High School Principal Ron German said it could allow students to Google information or otherwise utilize their cell phones during lessons. Other than during those specific lessons, cell phones could only be used before or after school. Cell phones may not be used as rewards or at any time during the class period without it being part of the lesson as supervised by the teacher and approved by the principal.
As part of the cell phone policy, penalties for using cell phones during school in violation of the policy will have their phone taken and held for 5 days. For second or subsequent offenses, phones will be held for 10 days.
