Road Department news ...
from Superintendent Roy Gene Thomasson
Polk Co. Road Dept is gearing up for the mowing season. Please watch out for mowers in your area.
Roy Gene Thomason, Superintendent, is proud to announce that several safety grants have been awarded to Polk County. These grants are conditioned by statistics such as accidents and fatalities. Benton Station Road has just been completed with advanced warning signs to alert drivers to travel in a safe manner. PCRD is anticipating final approval for the Local Safety Initiative Grant Program for the following roads Grassy Creek, Old Federal, Welcome Valley, Reynolds Bridge and Cookson Creek.
Improving the safety in school zones is also something PCRD has been working on. Mr. Thomason has requested that TDOT approve and install a flashing school zone signal at the entrance to Copper Basin Elementary and Copper Basin High School. Additional school zone markings have also been requested for South Polk Elementary.
Several surplus items were sold online at Govdeals.com. Proceeds from the sale will go towards the purchase of 2 patching machines. The main product for pothole patching has historically been a cold mix asphalt. Moving forward employees will be better equipped to apply a more durable patch on the roads. By using this method will save money, time, and increase the durability of the patch.
Currently, the Benton office has been forced to move into a temporary office due to water damage. Daily operations have not changed and repairs are on-going.
