Roof plan sent to Fire Marshall

Final approval has been made for roof design work on Benton and Copper Basin Elementary schools and the Plan of Action has been sent to the Fire Marshall. School Board members went over the details of the plan during a workshop held last Tuesday.
According to Dave Hemelright with KBJM Architects, 1600 feet of roofing at Benton Elementary will have to be replaced down to the decking. 700 square feet of the roof can be repaired. At Copper Basin Elementary, 2000 square feet will have to be replaced down to the decking. Once the decking repair and replacements are complete, both schools will get new roofing throughout.
No part of Chilhowee Middle with have to be replaced at the decking.
“It’s coming in a lot lower than what I thought,” said School Board member Gary Silvers. He estimated the project to cost around $1.2 million.
In an email, Hemelright laid out tentative dates for the project. He said the design would be completed and plans would be ready by March 14th, allowing for bids to be taken and opened by April 8th and work to begin by May 31st. Hemelright estimated work could be completed within 180 days, barring any unforeseen issues or weather problems.
