Train kills one
A Summerville, Georgia woman was struck and killed by a train December 18th just south of the York Road crossing.
A Summerville, Georgia woman was struck and killed by a train December 18th just south of the York Road crossing. A 911 call was received at the Polk County Sheriff’s Department at about 11:30 last Wednesday morning. Brittany Mitchell was found lying on the tracks. She was deceased.
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Department, the engineer and conductor of the train said they saw Mitchell lying on the tracks with her head facing north, feet facing south, and her head looking toward the east. The train operators said they hit the barking system with audible alarms already active due to the crossing ahead, but the female did not leave the tracks prior to impact.
The investigation is still open pending autopsy results.
