There is one lane now open on Hwy 64 after a rock and mudslide closed the highway near Maddens Branch, the same location as the 2010 slide that closed the road for several months. Crews finished the final cleanup of the containment area behind the rockfall fence that was installed after the 2010 slide Thursday morning. Geotechnical engineers will visit the area this week to determine how to proceed.
Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Shroeder visited the site last Thursday to see the area for himself and reassure Polk County’s elected officials TDOT was doing everything possible to clear the rockslide and make the road passable in time for Labor Day. A temporary traffic light has been installed to control the flow of traffic via the outside lane.
According to County Executive Hoyt Firestone, TDOT has cleaned up everything that had fallen and emergency bids are being taken to remove what is still hanging. He said Wright Brothers would be bringing in a crane to determine what to take down or how to stabilize the rest of the area. He said the geotechnical folks would determine how to tackle the area, but he did not know when they would tackle the rest of the problem. Firestone said the one-lane traffic light would remain in place until the work was completed. He pointed out the area did not have a shoulder and was a difficult spot for the large equipment needed to do the work.
Firestone said Shroeder was not TDOT Commissioner when the 2010 rockslide happened and had not been too familiar with it. He said Shroeder spent several hours in the area and got an up-close and personal view of the problems with Hwy. 64. Firestone said there were 12-14 critical areas that could cause problems at any time.
