The Wildcats Baseball nine picked up a big win over Cleveland to end the week on a positive note. Earlier week defeats at the hands of Baylor and Walker Valley had left a sour taste in the ‘Cats’ mouths but the 4-2 win over the Blue Raiders certainly raised morale.
Polk 4 – Cleveland 2
Andrew Aldridge “pitched his heart out” according to Coach Michael Carter. “His two hitter and Duncan Coffey’s game winning two-run homer highlighted a good effort by the whole team. This gives us a positive outlook going into the Sequoyah series and that’s important” Carter concluded.
Polk got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Coffey beat out an infield single with two out and scored on a Matt Hammons RBI double. Polk then upped the lead to 2-0 in the second when Hunter Carter walked and moved up on a single by Ben Norwood. Both runners moved up when Will Richmond reached on a defensive mis-hap to load the bases. Carter then scored on a fielder’s choice by Chris Wimberley. Coffey lead off the third with a single but was left on base when the next three batters were set down. Carter doubled to start the fourth, Richmond walked and Wimberley reached on an error to load the bases but a pick off and ground out left them loaded. In the fifth Polk left two runners stranded when Hammons singled and Carter Flowers reached on an error.
Cleveland then tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth they scored on an error, walk, and a single and in the sixth they scored on another Polk error, a catcher’s interference, and a fielder’s choice ground out.
The tie was short lived as Polk came back in the top of the sixth when Justin Brown was hit by a pitch after two Polk outs and scored on Coffey’s two-run blast over the right center field fence. Aldridge then set down the Raiders in the top of the seventh on a ground-out and two fly balls to complete the win.
