Polk County schools continued to show improvement according to the recently released state report card. In the value added category, Polk trailed the state average in only one of four measured categories but did show improvement in all four areas (Math, Reading, Social Studies, Science).
In those areas the state and county grades for Math and Social Studies were ‘B’. Both County and state had a grade of ‘C’ in reading. The state score for science was ‘C’ and Polk was ‘D’. Still, Polk showed improvement in its scores for Math, Social Studies and Science.
On an individual school basis, South Polk Elementary led the way with straight A’s. Moreover, the amount of gain in each category at South Polk surpassed the state averages. The gains recorded in Math, Social Studies and Science also were higher than the same scores in 2011. The only drop at South Polk was in reading where the gain fell from 4.0 to 3.2. The state reading average was negative.2. In 2011, South Polk had ‘A’ grades in Math, Reading and Science and a ‘B’ in Social Studies.
Copper Basin Elementary had A’s in Math and Science, with B’s in Reading and Social Studies. These were the same as in 2011, but the amount of gain was higher in Math, Social Studies and Science. All of Copper Basin Elementary’s gain scores were higher than the state averages. In 2011, Basin Elementary had only one A and three B’s.
Benton Elementary value added grades were the same as in 2011. These were B in Math and Reading, D in Social Studies and F in Science. The gain in Social Studies was less negative than it had been in 2011.
Chilhowee Middle School value added Math scores improved from ‘F’ in 2011 to ‘C’ in 2012. Social Studies increased from a ‘D’ in 2011 to ‘A’ in 2012. Science improved from ‘F’ to ‘D’, while Reading remained at ‘D’.
Attendance figures improved at each elementary school and at Chilhowee. South Polk reported an attendance average of 95.8, Copper Basin Elementary 95.0, Benton Elementary 94.7 and Chilhowee Middle 94.2
