People Helping People, Polk County’s local non-profit assistance organization opened their new Community Kitchen on Monday, October 1
People Helping People, Polk County’s local non-profit assistance organization opened their new Community Kitchen on Monday, October 1. The Community Kitchen was founded due to the desire of Gail Wilcoxon and others at People Helping People to feed those in the community who cannot afford to eat well. This includes children and the elderly who cannot cook for themselves.
The facility was inspected in late September and given the “green light” to open by the Tennessee Department of Health. In the eight days that the Community Kitchen has been open, 201 meals have been served either at the People Helping People location or as a carry out meal. Delicious meats and vegetables make up the nutritious meals and volunteer Elois Ledford does most of the cooking.
Currently, the food and other items necessary to provide the meals are funded through donations. The meals are open to anyone and donations for the meals are encouraged and welcomed. Because of regulations, any carry out meal requires a minimum $5 donation.
As in the past, the community has “stepped up” to support this endeavor to help others and the donations are steadily increasing. Meals are being served at the People Helping People Community Kitchen each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon until 5 pm. The facility is located in the old Benton Manufacturing /Flea Market building on Highway 411 next to Burgess Feed and Hardware. The physical address is 184 Mull Rd.
