Free breakfast for students
The Polk County Nutrition Department will be offering a free breakfast to all students beginning October 22, 2012. The universal breakfast will be a grab and go breakfast so students will be able to take their breakfast to the classroom if necessary.
McMinn County started the universal breakfast program the week of Labor Day and according to Carol Young, the McMinn School Nutrition Director, it has been a success. At the School Nutrition Academy in September, several studies presented on the universal breakfast program showed an improvement in behavior and attendance, math and reading scores, and the likelihood of a student maintaining a more nutritious diet throughout the day. Jennifer Wood says she feels the program will be successful with support from Dr. Jones, the School Board, Principals, Managers, and Cooks.
