According to Herbert Clark, Master Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and local campaign coordinator, the Toys for Tots program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year. The program then distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver a new toy at Christmas as a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters, in order to help them become responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.
Master Sergeant Clark stated that last year the Toys for Tots program rose to the challenge, delivering over 800 toys sourced from outside the county and valued at approximately $7,600, along with hundreds of toys collected within Polk County, all to over 375 children. All toys were distributed by the East and West Polk fire departments, Farner Presbyterian, and Kids Exchange. Toys for Tots plays an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most important resources: communities united in common cause for the well-being of our children. Master Sergeant Clark stated that Toys for Tots depends heavily on the support of the local community. Among those giving of their time and money last year were East Polk Fire and Rescue, West Polk Fire and Rescue, Tallent Drug Co., Peoples Bank, BB&T, the North Georgia Physical Therapy Association, Appalachian Community Bank, Christmas Is Here, Piggly Wiggly, and Fred’s of Benton, as well as many private citizens.
