A space heater being used to warm a camping trailer is suspected of causing a fire that claimed the lives of three Grassy Creek residents Monday a week ago.
Firefighters from East Polk Fire and Rescue discovered the bodies of the three victims on Monday morning, September 24th, after extinguishing a blaze that engulfed an 8 foot by 24 foot Camper on Deal Hollow Road. According to Polk County Detective Kevin Cole, the State Coroner’s Office has now positively identified the victims as Holly M. Reynolds, 26, and her two children, Christopher Kadence Reynolds, age 3, and Kinsley A. Reynolds, age 2. Reynolds was pregnant at the time of her death. Detective Cole said preliminary autopsy reports listed the cause of death for all three victims as smoke inhalation, though a final determination will await the outcome of toxicology reports.
According to Detective Cole, preliminary findings indicated the fire was accidental in nature, most likely started by an electric space heater the family was using to keep warm. Temperatures in the Grassy Creek area had dipped into the upper 30’s the morning of the fire. Cole indicated a final determination of the cause of the blaze, will await a report by investigators from the Tennessee Fire Prevention Division Bomb and Arson Section.
