Election Commissioners certified the August 2 election and concerns about 4^th Fractional Township registration and election workers were addressed during their regular monthly meeting last Tuesday.

Before the meeting, Election Administrator Steve Gaddis explained that a half a dozen or so people registered in the 4^th Fractional Township were showing as not being registered, including newly-elected Township commissioner Doug Collins. Gaddis said something had happened in the computer when voters were put into the system in the city that knocked them off the list in the Township. He said he saw several names that he knew were registered, so they went back to an old hard copy of the list to put people back into the computer system.

Commissioner Mac York told the commission he had received a phone call about a poll worker at Chilhowee Middle School who allegedly refused to give his last name when asked. York said he was told the man said his name was R.J. and “that’s all you need to know.” He said RJ was the son of commissioner Pete Davis and was ineligible to work the election.

Board Chairman Ron Oneal said there was no one else available to help and that because of the emergency, he sent Davis down to Chilhowee. He said it was hard to get people to work and he didn’t know the solution to finding workers. York said he just wondered why he wouldn’t give his last name.

Gaddis said he hoped the pay raise for workers would help get people to work on election day. Freeman Curbow said a lot of people would lose money if they took a day off of work to work the election. Gaddis said the workers put in long days for not a lot of money.

At the end of the meeting, commissioners announced the last day to register for the November election was October 1^st. The next meeting of the Election Commission will be September 13 at 3 p.m.
