General business was also conducted at Monday night’s lengthy School Board meeting. School Board member Tracy Bishop made a motion to nominate Mark Williams as Vice-Chairman, which Jayson Lamb seconded. The motion passed with unanimous approval by the Board.
The School Board also voted to approve a trip to Florida for the Copper Basin High School Band, and voted yes to the purchase of computers for Chilhowee Middle School using Title I funds.
Diane Wilson, whose son was the target of a racial slur at a polling place earlier this year, was supposed to address the Board, but didn’t attend the meeting. She asked the Board to stop all elections from being held in schools.
School Board member Gary Silvers announced to the audience that this was possible, but that it would mean no other groups would be able to hold meetings at schools either.
Since Wilson was not in attendance, the Board decided not to discuss the issue at this time.
The School Board meets the 2nd Monday of every month at 7 pm, alternating at each of the schools in Polk County.
