The county commission has voiced opposition to a proposed change in the coon hunting season, which was just approved in the Bear Reserve for this year.

The “Super Tuesday” election will put Tennessee and several other states in the spotlight for the hotly contested race for the Republican party nomination for President, along with delegates for that race. Other than that, there is only one contested race – the Democrat party nomination for Road Superintendent. The other local candidates are unopposed in their bids to win their party’s nomination.
Voters can go to the Election Commission office on Hwy. 411 in Benton from 9-4 weekdays and 9-12 Saturdays through Tuesday, Feb. 28, except for President’s Day on Feb. 20, when the office will be closed. Satellite voting will be held 9-4 at the Copper Basin Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 18; Wednesday, Feb. 22; and Saturday, Feb. 25. Both offices are handicap accessible.
Voters are reminded that a photo ID with name and photograph is now required.
For those who want to vote by mail, Feb. 28 is the last day a written request/application may be received.

There are nine Republican Presidential candidates on the ballot, although some have already dropped out of the race and two are essentially unknown: Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Charles “Buddy” Roemer, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. On the Democrat side, Barack Obama is unopposed in his bid for the nomination for a second term.
The only local race is on the Democrat side for Road Superintendent, where Roy (Gene) Thomason Jr. is challenging incumbent Harold Hood. Unopposed Democrats are incumbent Randy Yates, Assessor of Property; Constable 1st District, Cody L. Day; Constable 2nd District, Howard H. Deverell; and Constable 3rd District Frankie L. Womble.
Local Republicans are unopposed in their bid to face the Democrat in the August General Election: Assessor of Property, William A. Bracken; Road Superintendent, John Trantham; Constable 1st District, Daniel Leland Oswald; Constable 2nd District, Robert Yates; and Constable 3rd District, Walter K. Hyatt.
Republicans will also be able to vote for 14 committed and uncommitted delegates-at-large and three committed and uncommitted delegates for the Third Congressional District.
