The county commission has voiced opposition to a proposed change in the coon hunting season, which was just approved in the Bear Reserve for this year.

Polk could have a new location for its library. The Library Board will be
asking the County Commission for approval to move the library from the
Courthouse to what is currently home to the Benton Family Health Care Center. A
new building is currently under construction for the health care facility and
Friends of the Library plans to purchase the old building if the commission
approves the move.
The
Library Board unanimously approved the idea at its Jan. 10 meeting. Arthur
Bigham said the Ocoee Regional Health Corporation Board had approved the sale
but the contract can’t be signed until FOLA has assurances that the county is
willing to allow the Library Board to move to the new location. He offered a
resolution to be presented to the commission that notes that greater
accessibility to library services is vital for maximum use of library services
but accessibility is limited by the current Courthouse location. The Library
Board noted that the number of hours the library is open would still depend
allocations from the county.
FOLA
plans to finance the remodeling of the building to maximize its use as a
library and to make it available to the county for a $1/year lease. Jenny
Rogers with FOLA said there is a lot of electrical work to be done and the
building will need a new roof soon. She said there will be no problem removing
walls. She said there will be lots of room for future growth.
Roger
Mayer said a new location could help with usage of the West Polk library. The
Board had wanted to shift some hours to an evening or Saturday, but that wasn’t
possible with the Courthouse location. Mayer noted the county is paying for
utilities in the East Polk library, located in the former Ducktown Dodge
building through a lease donation from Verlon Newman, and he hoped the same
agreement could be made for a new facility in Benton.
Friends
of the Library had raised money several years ago in hopes of building two new
libraries in the county. When that fell through, funds were provided for
renovating the new location in East Polk, for renovations in Benton, and for
other library needs, but FOLA kept some funds available in hopes of finding a
better location for the West Polk facility.
