Wildcats basketball team and feels they can finish near the top of the
District. He said the keys to the season will be consistency and confidence. “I
know we will be tireless and compete, our players leave it all on the floor,
they’re hard workers and unselfish” said Coach Brewer.
The
‘Cats return three starters from last year in Logan Brewer, Al Akins, and Evan
Ball. Akins has just joined the team and has seen very limited practice time
because of football (they finished the season last week in the second round of
the playoffs). Akins will handle the point guard duties and run the offense.
His quickness increases his ability to drive to the basket drawing more
defenders and leaving a teammate open. His speed and aggression also assist in
his rebounding capabilities.
Brewer will man the postd and provide inside scoring
and rebounding leadership. Brewer is an unselfish player and will pass the ball
when double teaming limits his scoring potential. He is a strong, aggressive
player who seldom sees bench time. Evan Ball plays much larger than his size
and this enhances his scoring potential. He is always a threat from beyond the
three-point line that helps open up the inside for other scorers.Senior Cody Burger will see time at
both the wing and the post. Chandler Hutcheson, Cody Groomes, and Will Richmond
will share the other early season starting time with opponents’ match-ups, game
plan, and “who’s hot” dictating the starters. Andrea Ragona, an exchange student
from Rome, Italy, will work into some starting time as he adapts to the USA
method of play. “We feel that Andrea is going to be a big help as time
progresses. He is having to adapt his game to our style because the Europeans
style their game after the NBA…very physical and aggressive. He is making good
progress because of his work ethic” said Brewer. Derick Weber will provide some
assistance at the post and his brother Devin Weber and Javan Simpson will see
more playing time as their experience levels increase and they adapt to the
speed of the game at the varsity level.
“I am
really confident that we will be competitive and I will be disappointed if we
don’t largely improve on last years’ 11-20 record. Our players are working hard
and in good condition and we will compete. Again, we will leave it all on the
floor. I’m proud of the team” concluded Coach Brewer.
