In 1931, Chancellor T.L. Stewart dismissed a lawsuit filed against the Board of Education by Prof. J.B. Brown, whose contract was not renewed by the new Board, which hired J.L. Brewer as principal of Polk County High School ... Eureka Mills called back laid off workers to fill an excess of orders for knitted underwear ... Twelve people were baptized during revival at Conasauga .. PCHS was working to bring its library up to standard to get back in the SASC.

In 1941, deputy Pryor Crowe was injured by a shotgun blast while he was in Ducktown ... Around 25-30 local men quit work digging a tunnel near where Ocoee No. 3 was being construction because they were required to join the Tunnel and Workers Union, but they paid the fee and went back to work ... The cotton report showed 1925 bales of cotton ginned, compared with 760 bales the year before.

In 1961, President Kennedy’s Rural Housing bill was passed, expanding the Farmers Home Administration to provide more service to rural areas ... On the first honor roll at PCHS: Mary Merrell, Jeanette Ballew, Joyce Bishop, Brenda Cross, Mary Swafford, Linda Brewer, Linda Ballew, Manon Ledford, Joe Adams, Linda Green and Mary McCroy ... The Wildcats ended the season with a 4-6 record ... Addie Triplett celebrated her 87th birthday ... A bedroom group was on sale for $99.

In 1971, the Polk County News celebrated its 90th birthday ... Matt Witt announced his candidacy for Sheriff ... Another motorcycle hill climb was held. Hiram Bazemore and Roland Parrott took first and second in the big open class .. Members of the 4-H Land Judging team were Jack Swanson, Mike Stinnett, Paul Gamble and Gary woody ... Eddie Raper was president of the fourth grade at Turtletown. Lynn Cheek was vice president.

In 1981, Joe Gregory won an election to the Volunteer Electric Board of Trustees but was not seated because his nephew worked for the utility. The case went to court ... New members of the National Honor Society were Doreen Bates, Angie Clayton, Darrell Morgan, Jennifer White, Candy Bates, Kathy Bard, Michelle Dunn, Patty Hill, Stan Howard, Julie Moorhouse, Terri Phillips, Becki Presswood, Kim Samples and Teresa Stone ...The Wildcat Marching Band won a Superior rating at the Smokey Mountain Invitational Festival ... Dr. Al Rymer opened a chiropractic office in Athens ... Lucy Clemmer died at age 83.

In 1991, the School Board gave two-week layoffs to all non-professional personnel, the Director of Instruction, and the Attendance Supervisor  and made other cuts as a way of helping to balance the budget ... The Forest Service announced plans to replace the Towee Creek bridge ... The unemployment rate was 13.8% ... Angio Systems began moving into its new building in the Copper Basin Industrial park ... Ducktown hosted an open house of the newly rehabilitated homes ... Benton City Commissioners were concerned about loitering around the Courthouse Square ... Bowater held a grand opening for its new recycling plant .. Residential districts in the Copper Basin were nominated for the National Register of Historic Places ... Preferred Medical began building back the business formerly owned by Superior Medical ... More than 900 enjoyed the excursion train from Etowah to Copperhill ... Wildcat Mike Woody set a record with 197 yards rushing on 29 carries.

In 2001, construction of the new PCHS was underway but there were no plans for a sewer line … Horns Creek Road residents asked Ocoee Utilities to consider providing water to them … A survey showed support for teacher salaries and local roads, with a wheel tax being the most popular way to raise money … Teachers and students were benefitting from the use of computers in the classroom … More than 50 business leaders and elected officials attended a session on bioterrorism … The unemployment rate was 3.1%, the lowest in recent memory … Teacher negotiations continued to be frustrating for both sides … The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association was featured at a national humanities conference.
