PUBLIC NOTICE

The Individual’s with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 2004 (IDEA) were enacted into law as Public Law Congress. This law includes amendments that do have an effect on special education services Local Education Agencies (LEA) provide for students whose parents have enrolled them in home school or private school programs. Additionally in 2009, the IDEA was provided funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which provided special education a unique opportunity to jump start school reform and improvements efforts while also saving and creating jobs and stimulating the economy.

It is important for Polk County Schools to determine the current group of eligible private and home school students so that decisions can be made as to the types and amounts of special education services that will be provided for this population. Students in private or home schools are only eligible for a proportionate amount of the Federal funds provided for the education of students with disabilities. Polk County Schools has scheduled a meeting to further explain services available for these children. This meeting will be held at the Central Office on September 24, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. Private school administrators and parents of home school children are encouraged to attend this informative meeting on IDEA funding. Please RSVP Jean Bramlett at 299-0471 if you are planning to attend.

Polk County Schools is responsible for assessing and completing an IEP Service Plan for student’s ages 3-22 suspected of having a disability.
