Loyd Sowers, 52, died as a result of massive trauma from the head-on wreck around 8:40. Sowers had just pulled out of the Adventure Unlimited parking lot and was traveling in the east bound lanes of Highway 64 when his car crossed the center line and struck the bus.
A Knoxville
man was killed Aug. 7 when his car slammed into a tour bus on Hwy. 64 in Ocoee.
Two passengers on the bus were transported to the hospital with relatively
minor injuries.

Sowers, 52, died as a result of massive trauma from the head-on wreck around
8:40. Sowers had just pulled out of the Adventures Unlimited parking lot and was
traveling in the east bound lanes of Highway 64 when his car crossed the center
line and struck the bus. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, he was driving
under the influence of alcohol.
Sowers was
pinned in his vehicle, which sustained the damage on the driver’s side.
According to West Polk Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Steve Lofty, it took about
35 minutes to extricate him from the vehicle. He was airlifted to Erlanger,
where he was pronounced dead.
Lofty said
the bus was carrying 23 passengers on their return from Cherokee. Initial
reports were that there could be as many as ten injuries or more. He said the
critical need was for the extrication but he also felt there was a need for an
immediate assessment of the passengers, many of whom were elderly. He called
for additional manpower and first responders to deal with possible injuries on
the bus. More than 20 volunteers responded. In addition to the two Rural/Metro
ambulances from West Polk, an ambulance from East Polk was dispatchers and two
ambulances from Bradley County were requested. As it turned out, Lofty said,
the number of passengers needing transport turned out to be two.
While
rescuers worked on the extrication, the passengers remained on the bus where
EMS personnel and first responders checked them out and talked to them. Quest
Expeditions offered to open its doors for the passengers but they decided to
stay on the bus. Life Care was contacted to see if they had a bus that could be
used to transport the passengers back to Chattanooga, and they responded.
Lofty said
this is the worst wreck the squad had worked in four or five years. Luckily,
the said, the driver was able to keep the bus under control so it did not tip
over. The bus remained at the site until morning but was able to be driven off
from the scene.
Lofty said
he talked to the passengers and told them he appreciated them staying calm
during the incident. They said they appreciated how courteous everyone was and
one commented at how quickly so many volunteers showed up to help. Most had
felt the impact of the crash but the bus was not seriously damaged. Lofty
voiced appreciation to Bradley EMS and Life Care for their assistance.
