thanks to the foresight of the Polk County 911 Board.
“It’s a win-win all around,” said Zina
Bergman, who was on hand at the fire station in Benton last week to upload the
software and maps onto laptops that will be housed in each ambulance. The
ambulance computers link directly to the information that comes in with a 911
call, so that EMTs can be directed exactly where they need to go in an
emergency.
“Polk County is the first county to offer
this,” Bergman said. “It is not even available in Knoxville,” she added.
Bergman said they were shocked it was available to them and said that if other
counties or municipalities get the maps, they will be able to use the same
software provided by Polk’s 911 board in other counties.
Polk County’s 911 Board provided all the
mapping information and software; Rural/Metro only had to purchase GPS units
for the vehicles. The GPS unit reacts with the mapping software to show where
the ambulance is in relation to where the emergency is, giving a direct route
to the patient.
According to Steve Lofty, the 911 Board has
had this technology for a couple of years, but no one has been able to use it
before. “We wanted to give it to them free so they could launch this technology
in Polk County,” Lofty said, adding, “No one else around us is using this.”
A grant received by the City of Benton to purchase
computers for police vehicles last year now gives them the capability to use
the 911 Board’s mapping software as well. Benton Police Chief Rocky King said
his officers were in process of downloading the information into the five cars
that have computers.
Bergman said she was excited to get the software
and looked forward to going to the corporate folks to show them how it can
coexist with their patient care software, enabling them to expand it into other
areas.

At the Jan. 19 meeting, commissioners were told that the Library Board would like to move the library from the lower level of the Courthouse to the building soon to be vacated by the Benton Family Health Care Center.
