There’s not much local support for the governor’s idea of dropping the salary scale for teachers, but some educators see possible value in providing salary flexibility for school districts.

The new soccer league in West Polk will be getting a new home. The county commission has approved giving five acres of industrial park land for soccer fields because there is not enough room at the recreation area. The land is between Chilhowee Apartments and the Health Department building.
Mark Bishop said a 70x100 field is needed for ages 12 and under but they are currently playing on a smaller field. He said the kids are at a disadvantage when they go to a full-size field. He said he didn’t think the county would be able to do anything with an industry on that side of the industrial park, which has land on both sides of Parksville Road. “It’s just laying there,” he said. Pippenger said there is no foreseeable use for it in the future but it will provide a good place for a soccer field. He added the local league can’t have competitions here because of the smaller field.
Neal Greenwood, representing the soccer league, said they could host games and tournaments with a regulation size field, adding that could have an economic impact on the community. He said the league will assume the responsibility of taking care of the field and creating a parking area. Bishop agreed that any sport will bring a lot of people to a community for tournaments and they will spend money on meals and for lodging with a multiple-day tournament.
Pippenger made the motion, seconded by Isaac Bramblett. It passed unanimously.
In other business, the commissioners approved a motion to have surveys done on the county’s two industrial parks. Pippenger said he has not been able to find out how much acreage the current owners have and what is available. Keith Ballew said the Copper Basin park was laid out and put into lots so there should be a plat somewhere. Pippenger, Bramblett, Wanda Cheek and Daren Waters were appointed to a committee to work with County Executive Mike Stinnett on the project.
• Daniel Deal said they can’t have softball tournaments in the Basin because there are no lights on the fields. Bishop said the commission needs to address parks in the upcoming budget, noting money has not been allocated for maintenance and work is needed. He said it will be a big expense if they go another 5-10 years.
• Approval was given for a continuation of the current budget until the new one is approved.
• Unanimous approval was given for the Five Year Economic Development plan developed as part of the Three-Star Program, which gives grant points to counties that show an effort to enhance economic development. Also approved was a resolution stating the county complies with federal Title IV anti-discrimination laws.
• Mark Bishop said he wanted to wait until after the close of the current fiscal year before working on the budget for 2010-2011 so they would have complete information on this year’s revenue and expenses as well as state revenues for next year. He also said he didn’t want to rush the school budget, which is facing a $250,000 increase in state retirement costs. The Budget Committee will meet July 20, 7 p.m. at the Courthouse in Benton.
• Director of Schools James Jones advised the commission that Tracy McAbee has been hired by the school system as of July 1 and will need to be replaced by the county commission.

At the Jan. 19 meeting, commissioners were told that the Library Board would like to move the library from the lower level of the Courthouse to the building soon to be vacated by the Benton Family Health Care Center.
