Ledford was inducted into the Polk County High School Hall of Fame at this
year’s Alumni Banquet. She takes great pride in the fact she graduated from
high school at a time when Latin was taught. She had taken four years of Latin
at Polk County High School. What makes this so special was she was born near
the end of World War I and grew up during the Great Depression.
After graduation in 1935 and a brief marriage, which
resulted in the birth of her first daughter, Evelyn. She went to work at
Hardwick Woolen Mills. It was hard production work but, like most things in her
life, she found a way to have fun and make friends. This in spite of the fact
she walked from her home near Smyrna Church to Highway 411 to catch a bus to
Cleveland each morning and back in the afternoon.
In November of 1942, she married a sailor named
Clarence. Whenever his ship was in the states for repairs, this little country
girl went wherever it might be to visit her husband. She has many fine stories
of her trips cross-country to Philadelphia and California. She was in
California with Clarence, when the war ended.
Their second daughter, Manon was born the next year. At
the end of World War II, she and Clarence settled down in Ocoee to raise their
2 daughters.
This inductee was always ingenuous and a living
testament to the fact “Where there’s a will there’s a way.” A favorite memory
of her daughters was the time dad forgot and took both car keys to work with
him. Not to be outdone, she found an old key, some nail polish and a file.
(Don’t try this at home) She set to work putting polish on the key and
carefully sliding it in the ignition. She would file on the key and repeat the
process. Soon she had a key that started the car and off to town they went.
About the time her oldest daughter, Evelyn, graduated
from Polk County High School in 1955, Tom Beckler was elected Road
Superintendent of Polk County. He came by one day and offered Waunetta a job as
his secretary. Evelyn spent many days sitting at the kitchen table with an old
Royal Typewriter teaching Waunetta how to type. She obviously succeeded as she
worked with Mr. Becker for the duration of his term and also for his successor,
Henry Crox. When Mr. Crox retired, so did she until Dennis White was elected
County Judge. She returned to the courthouse as his secretary and also served
with Charles Stevens until her retirement.
Her love of genealogy is a well-known fact. She has
probably been in every cemetery in the southeast searching for branches of her
extended family tree.
At every family reunion, she would have her “book” that
contains generations of the families and each year she would add the newest
marriages, births and deaths.
She is now the matriarch of a family spanning 5
generations. It includes 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren
and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
She has had a long-term interest in and service to the
Order of the Eastern Star. She has been a member of the Ocoee Chapter for over
50 years and has served in numerous offices, including 2 terms as Worthy
Matron.
She was born May 5, 1917 and this year marks her 75th
anniversary of her graduation from Polk County High School.
She has always looked forward to the alumni banquet
each year and rarely misses.
Her contribution to this county makes her an
outstanding choice for this honor and a fine addition to the Polk County Hall
of Fame.
The governor’s proposal to increase class sizes in the elementary schools, and to base the state’s payments on those maximums, could mean a significant loss of revenue for teaching positions in Polk County.
At the Jan. 19 meeting, commissioners were told that the Library Board would like to move the library from the lower level of the Courthouse to the building soon to be vacated by the Benton Family Health Care Center.
