In 1990, TVA was under criticism in the wake of Ocoee River flooding ... The county commission voted to oppose a regional landfill and recycling mall in Copperhill ... The governor asked for disaster aid for flood victims ... A National Guard unit was to be established in Polk ... A wheel tax was eyed to provide funds for schools.
In 2000, Congressman Zach Wamp asked TVA to change its mind about not providing additional upper Ocoee water for competition … State officials and members of the Conasauga River Alliance for voluntary efforts to maintain the high quality of the river, thus avoiding state designation and regulations … Curtis Hill of Benton returned a bank bag he found with $3,200 in cash … Copperhill officials were asked to help with appearance and safety in the city … Benton Manufacturing closed the doors on its sewing factory, citing foreign competition … Ocoee Outfitters asked legislators to require that money be spent for promotion in the proposed revision to the rafting tax law … The Ocoee sewer line was nearing completion.
The governor’s proposal to increase class sizes in the elementary schools, and to base the state’s payments on those maximums, could mean a significant loss of revenue for teaching positions in Polk County.
At the Jan. 19 meeting, commissioners were told that the Library Board would like to move the library from the lower level of the Courthouse to the building soon to be vacated by the Benton Family Health Care Center.
