Wildcats will play in the consolation round after a heartbreaking loss to second seeded Sweetwater.
The Polk County Wildkittens will play for the district title, while the Wildcats will play in the consolation round after a heartbreaking loss to second seeded Sweetwater. The Wildkittens play McMinn Central Feb. 23 at Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats play in the consolation game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Wildkittens opened tournament play defeating third seeded Meigs County 56-35 on Thursday. The win guaranteed Polk a first round home game in the upcoming region tournament, set them up for the district championship game against nemesis McMinn Central and was their 21st of the season against four losses.
Hollie German got the first three of her game high 24 points early, and the Lady Tigers never got closer than two. Polk inched further ahead each quarter and used a stiff man-to-man defense to limit Lady Tiger shots. Meigs stayed relatively close until an 11-0 run late in the third quarter broke it open.
Polk out shot Meigs from 3-point range 8-5 and was a perfect 6 for 8 from the foul line. Meigs never made it to the free throw line. German had five three-point baskets, Stephanie Qualls two and Sara Wilson one.

A bad third quarter lead to a one-point loss for the Polk Wildcats and dropped them into a playoff for third place in the District Tournament. A 36-29 halftime lead evaporated into a 44-49 deficit at the end of three quarters for Polk as they committed six turnovers in the crucial stanza. Naaman Stillwell and Logan Brewer also picked up their fourth personal fouls which limited their playing time and added to Sweetwater’s trips to the free throw stripe.
Sweetwater jumped out to a four point lead to open the game. Alex Akins hit a short jumper and a free throw and Derrick Wooten hit a three to give Polk a 6-4 lead at the 5:58 mark in the first quarter. Wooten added his second three and Akins hit a long bomb as the clock went off to give the Polk Five an 18-11 lead after one quarter.
Naaman Stillwell was the “Big Cat” in the second quarter. He battled the Sweetwater insiders and hit three buckets in the lane and added two free throws and Polk took a 36-29 lead into the locker room at half time.
In the crucial third quarter, Polk committed six turnovers and Sweetwater hit three 3’s to lead to their outscoring Polk 20-8. This gave them a 49-44 lead after three quarters.
Polk battled back to take the lead when Logan Brewer hit two from the charity stripe and put Polk ahead at 54-52 with 2:39 to play. With 34 seconds left in the game Sweetwater scored to take a 55-54 lead and stole the in-bound pass attempt to seal their win.
