It’s hard to believe that a basketball team scores only seven points in the last half of a game yet wins by seven. But, that is exactly what the Polk County Wildkittens did in defeating McMinn Central in the Region 3-AA Tournament Championship game at East Hamilton HS by a score of 37-30. Not since 1984 had Polk defeated Central in a Region title game.
In that game Polk trailed late, roared back from 15 down to beat the heavily favored Chargerettes. This time, Polk got the big lead and held on for dear life.
Alex Rogers hit a three pointer 15 seconds into the game for a 3-0 Polk lead and they never trailed throughout the game. Hollie German was 4-4 from the free throw line and added a field goal for six points and Maclain Yowarsky added five more on a three pointer and a two-point field goal. Meanwhile, Polk was shutting down Central’s offense with an intense zone defense, contesting every shot. Polk was up 16-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Balanced scoring was again prevalent in the second quarter. German, Rogers, Wilson, and Yowarsky all put up points. Stephanie Qualls was active in moving the ball on offense and intense on defense but did not take a shot until the fourth quarter. The Chargerettes hit a foul shot at 7:28 to make the score 16-6. Rogers was good on a three at 6:56 and Polk was up 19-6. The half ended with Polk up 30-14.
In the crucial third quarter Polk went into a spread offense and took only eight shots the entire 8 minutes, missing 3 lay-ups and recording no field goals. The ‘Kittens really slowed down the game, at times they held the ball as long as two minutes with no one taking a shot. Their only point of the quarter came when Yowarsky converted one of two free throwsat the 7:27 mark. Their defense was as intense as they held the Chargerettes to six points and the quarter ended with Polk ahead 31-20.
The key element in the fourth quarter was the ten defensive rebounds recorded by Polk, most of them coming in the paint. They battled Central’s superior height with physical determination and intensity in preventing the opponent from taking follow up shots. Central was within five at the 3:42 mark, 31-26, with Polk still playing ball control. The Chargerettes were forced into a fouling situation and Polk hit 4 foul shots to go with Yowarsky’s lone field goal for a final score of 37-30. Yowarsky with 12 points was the only Polk player to score in all four quarters. She also led the team with seven rebounds.
For the second consecutive game four of the starters played the entire game. Lauren Silvers came in with 1:17 left when Yowarsky was whistled for her fifth foul.
“It was a great win for us” said Coach Ron Davis. I wish we could have made more of our lay-ups and our foul shooting was not that great in the second half” he added. The coach concluded “I’m really proud of our team, we played with a lot of intensity the whole game and it is a great win.”
