In 1930, a meeting in Chattanooga lambasted the growth of chain stores, which were said to be hurting independent businesses and not helping local communities ... New owners announced that Centenary College in Cleveland would be a co-educational senior college and would specialize in teacher training ... J.E. Adams was re-elected chairman of the Polk County Republicans and C.C. Guinn was Secretary ... J.B. Curbow of Ocoee left for South America to supervise a hydroelectric job.

In 1940, political boss Ed Crump endorsed Gov. Prentice Cooper for a second term ... The Alcoa plant set a production record for aluminum ... Judge Sue K. Hicks dismissed remaining cases after juries reported not guilty verdicts in several cases charging drunkenness and driving while drunk ... Students at Ball Play school painted the stove, washed windows, mounted and hung new pictures.

In 1950, Anna Jean Stone led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 304 points in 19 games, followed by Peggy Maynor with 253 ... Trains between Copperhill and Atlanta were discontinued ... Louise Carney died at age 94 ... At the movies: “The Red Pony” with Robert Mitchum and Myrna Loy.

In 1960, a number of post offices were featured in the February issue of the Postmasters Gazette, including Postelle, the tiniest office in the county, with Elsie Dale postmaster ... Edward Fitch resigned as superintendent of schools ... Sandra Webb earned Highest Distinction honors at PCHS. Ed Lawson received the good citizenship medal.

In 1970, Larry Davis received a Masters Degree ... W.I. Davis announced his candidacy for County Court Clerk. Incumbents running were J.T. Stafford, sheriff; Deryl Curbow, Circuit Court Clerk; Hugh Hampton, Register of Deeds; I.J. Wright, County Court Clerk; and W.A. Campbell, trustee ... On the honors list at Tennessee Wesleyan: Johnny Coe, William Bell, David Bigham, Clara Campbell, Bruce Bell, Randall Crump, Joe Marine, Helen Ward, John Stillwell.

In 1980, state senator Ben Longley said money should be available for repair of both the Rogers Creek Bridge and the Reliance Bridge ... Derailment of an L&N freight train near Reliance caused an acid spill from two cars.

In 1990, flooding devastated Copperhill and some downstream homeowners ... Studies were underway for a Hwy. 64 bypass but the state announced federal money would be needed for the project to become reality ... Union members turned down a contract from Boliden and supported a proposal from a Knoxville businessman. There were questions about the Knoxville man’s ability to purchase TCC ... A recycling mall and landfill were eyed for TCC property in Copperhill ... A Forest Service plan to reduce below-cost timber harvesting could reduce money coming into the county as well as affecting local timber operators.

In 2000, The School Board approved a resolution to provide funds toward a new high school in West Polk and renovations at the remaining schools, with no restructuring of East Polk schools … TDOT scheduled hearings for four-lining Hwy. 411 north of Benton … Copperhill-McCaysville residents recalled the devastating flood that hit ten years earlier … TVA turned down a request to provide 15 days of upper Ocoee water for competition, saying it would stay with the original promise of ten days … The state was considering new parks fees … The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association received the Forest Service Spirit Award … Biology classes at CBHS were conducting a bird identification and feeding project
