Cherokee National Forest say they have temporarily closed the Peavine Road (FDR 221) and the Little Gassaway Road (FDR 45) in the Ocoee/Hiwassee Ranger District.
Due to recent severe winter weather
conditions Forest Service officials at the Cherokee National Forest say they have
temporarily closed the Peavine Road (FDR 221) and the Little Gassaway Road (FDR
45) in the Ocoee/Hiwassee Ranger District.The closures are effective immediately and will remain in
effect until weather and road conditions improve.

District Ranger, Monte Williams said, “The extremely cold weather and icy
conditions we’ve had this winter have really had an impact on many of our
Forest roads.Portions of the
Peavine and Little Gassaway roads have frozen and have significant areas of ice
buildup on them. Portions of these
roads are impassable. In order to protect the resources and ensure public
safety we believe it is necessary to temporarily close these roads.We will reopen them as soon as
conditions permit.”
The Peavine Road (FDR 221) is closed from the intersection of Baker Creek
Road (FDR 55) near Slyco Campground to Tumbling Creek Campground.The Little Gassaway Road (FDR 45) is
closed at Thunder Rock Campground. These roads will be monitored and will be
reopened when weather and road conditions permit.
