The School Board met in regular session Aug. 11.
David Bigham is to be the new vice-chairperson of the Polk County School Board with all members of the board approving.
PCHS entered into a cooperative agreement with Cleveland High School. “This is like the wrestling agreement that we had before. We don’t have girls soccer so our girls will play soccer for Cleveland High School,” explained Director of Schools James Jones. Board member Mark Williams raised the question of who would be responsible for insurance-liability, and Jones said that PCHS will be the secondary insurance and Cleveland will have insurance as well.
Approval of in-school practice for Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Football was given with Jones explaining that approval is required by TSSAA.
The Board approved of disposal of surplus property. “The surplus property is basically junk, we have tried to sell it. We have books that we don’t need and the fire marshal said that we have to get rid of them. We have old Brother printers, a copy machine that we can’t get parts for,” said Jones. Board member Mark Williams asked if recycling the books had been tried. Jones said that they have not tried. Board member Gary Silvers said that he thought that they, the recycling center, just took the books rather than the books being sold to them. Approval of disposal of the property was unanimous.
Approval of school class fees was unanimous. Carlton Deal asked what happens if a student wants to take a non-required class but cannot afford to pay the fee. “It’s not required,” said Bigham. Jones commented, “In all actuality we can’t require fees.”
Board members present at this meeting were: David Bigham, Mark Williams, Gary Silvers, Carlton Deal, Tracy McAbee, Harmon Hardin and Jayson Lamb.
“I’ve enjoyed working on this board. Mr. Jones did a good job,” said Carlton Deal as the meeting closed and he ended a 16-year tenure as School Board member.
