Kimsey Junior College, better known locally as the old Ducktown School, has been named to the Ten in Tennessee list of endangered historic structures. The Top Ten listing notes that the structure is vacant and starting to deteriorate.
The building is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its significance. The listing of the 2008 Top Ten notes that the school is a rare example of rural collegiate public school architecture and is the only architect-designed structure in the Copper Basin. It was designed by architect Rueben Hunt.
In the early 1930's the Fourth Fractional Township Commissioners bought the northeast quarter of Section 5 of the Fourth Fractional Township, and in the depths of the Great Depression built Kimsey Junior College. It was never approved by the state for its intended use and stood empty until the late 1930's, when Ducktown School moved in, first as a high school and for the past 50 years as an elementary school. The Polk County Board of Education leased it, practically free of charge, from the Township.
August 2006 marked the first time the school did not open for students. The fate of the building lies in the hands of the commissioners of the Township, which owns the building and around 160 acres surrounding it. There is currently 24-hour security for the school.
The Tennessee Preservation Trust annually seeks nominations from the public for the roster of some of the state's most endangered historic sites. Begun in 2001, this program highlights ten endangered places across the state to help garner support for saving threatened historic resources. A committee made up of grass-roots and professional preservationists from across the state meets to choose the list each spring.
