The county commission meets in regular session Thursday, 7 p.m. at the community center in Ducktown, with several items carried over from the May meeting and several new items and resolutions.
Chairman Mark Bishop had asked that legal matters and county attorney be put on the agenda after County Executive Mike Stinnett vetoed a motion by the commission to hire Jimmy Logan to represent them in a pending library lawsuit. Stinnett, who said the commission did not have the authority to hire an attorney, later hired Logan for the library matter. County Attorney Denny Mobbs is a member of Friends of the Library. To date, no lawsuit has been filed, although FOL attorney Roger Jenne sent a letter asking the commission to approve funding for two new libraries rather than face a lawsuit.
John Pippenger had asked that Ocoee Utilities be moved to the June agenda to get more information. He had questioned the utility district’s exclusive sewer rights in the Ocoee area even though it does not have a sewer line. Since then, Ocoee Utilities has officially given Benton the right to serve Ocoee Mountain Club and other adjacent property.
Buster Lewis was asked by Kim Nivens to put a suggestion to turn the old jail into a dog pound on the agenda. Also moved from May was a requested purchase of a small piece of county property near the Health Department.
The commission will also consider a request by the Copper Basin Hospital District trustees to help provide funding for a possible lawsuit against the wording of the lease of Copper Basin Medical Center.
Other agenda items include survey of property, old patrol cars, and resolutions for Litter Grant, Title VI, Three-Star Five Year Plan, Local Litigation Tax, and continuing budget.
