Is your child looking for something fun to do this summer? Look no further—Cleveland State Community College has just the thing!

Is your child looking for something fun to do this summer? Look no further—Cleveland State Community College has just the thing! The Office of Continuing Education at CSCC is offering three week-long summer camps through the College for Kids program.

The first camp is called Art Week, which runs from July 14-18. Ann Masincupp, Cleveland State Director of Continuing Education and Training, said, “The theme for Art Week is Me, Myself, and I. Each child will create an acrylic self-portrait, a clay sculpture, a textile body collage, and a paper mache mask.” Art Week will be facilitated by local Cleveland artist Mary Lofgren.  The art instructor aids are Joan Ingram, CSCC Early Childhood Education major, and Joy Camacho, CSCC Art major.

The second camp is Gardening and Ecology Week, which runs from July 21-25. During this week, students will participate in hands-on gardening, native plant studies, observation of natural habitats, and nature walks. Masincupp said, “Students will learn about seed germination and plant propagation and study vocabulary words.  Each day will also include at least one hands-on activity.” In addition to the gardening part of the week, there will also be two days devoted to ecology and energy efficiency. A trip has been scheduled to visit the Ocoee Whitewater Center where students will explore a stream in search of aquatic animals.  Students will also view and participate in demonstrations of solar-energy, hydro-electric energy, and robotic recycling.  Gardening and Ecology Week will involve several qualified instructors and instructor aids.  Cleveland State Community College Horticulture Technician Suzanne Bennett and CSCC Technology Instructor Allan Gentry are two of the instructors involved.

The third camp is Language Week, which runs from July 28-Aug. 1 and includes both Spanish and storytelling. Children will be introduced to Spanish through fun and interactive activities. Emphasis will be put on learning basic grammar and commonly used phrases. The story telling aspect of the week involves campers using their creativity to develop stories and share them with their peers. Language Week will be facilitated by Judy Baker, member of the Cleveland/Bradley Allied Arts Council and American Story Telling Guild and Dianna Ballew, CSCC Spanish Major.

The deadline to register for one, two, or all three camps is June 30 and space is limited. The cost is $35 per child, per camp. For more information on the College For Kids Camps, or for a complete list of non-credit courses for summer or fall, please visit the Cleveland State website at www.clevelandstatecc.edu or call 1-800-604-CSCC, ext. 489 or ext. 270.
